How To Remove Uninstallable Toolbars

Occasionally, when you install a new program and you didn’t read the fine print, it will automatically install toolbar(s) in your IE. These toolbars are often annoying, disruptive and take up valuable screen estate. In most cases, you can uninstall them via the Add/Remove Program panel, but there are times when they are very persistent and refuse to disappear from your browser.

In this example, we are going to uninstall the (this is only for illustration purpose. in no way did I mean that Alexa toolbar is not useful). The tool we are going to use is Autoruns.
Autoruns is a tool designed by Mark Russinovich and Bryce Cogswell, you can download the program using this link:
This tool can configure what programs run during startup. It can also be used to find out what plugins are installed in Internet Explorer.
To use the utility, run the application as Administrator:

Autoruns classify the objects, basically dynamic link libraries and programs, using different tabs. Just go to “Internet Explorer” tab:

In the screenshot above, we can see that the tab is split into three groups.
  • First group contains the browser helper objects. They are plugins designed to provide a new functionality.
  • Second group is a list of the toolbar in the browser
  • Third group are extensions.
In this case, we are going to remove the Alexa toolbar. Highlight the entry, right click and select “Delete”.

Done. You have just removed an uninstallable toolbar.

If all the tricks don’t work, the ultimatum is to reset your Internet Explorer to its default settings.
Using the search function in Windows 7, search for “internet options“. Alternatively, you can also access the Internet Options from the browser File menu.

Now go to the “Advanced Tab” and select “Reset“:

You need to quit all browser windows before using this function. You will see a popup window explaining the stuff that are going to be reseted:

This should restore your IE back to its original state.
Do you use any other ways to solve Internet Explorer 8 issues?

How To Fix Firefox is Already Running but is not Responding

This article will show you steps you can take to fix the following problem in Firefox : “ Firefox is already running but is nto responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system”.

Generally when you receive this message, Firefox won’t start up at all. So to get it up and running again, try the following.
    1) Close the existing Firefox process
In many cases, shutting the existing Firefox process can solve the problem. To do this, open Windows Task Manager and click on the “Proceses” tab. Find the process “Firefox.exe” and click on “End Process”.
You can now try starting Firefox. If it still doesn’t work, try a reboot. If that still doesn’t fix it, then move on to step 2.
    2) Delete the lock file
If Firefox is not starting up, but there is also no Firefox process running, you need to check if there is a problem with the lock file. If the lock file does not get deleted when Firefox is closed, it can prevent it from opening again.
The lock file will be located in your profile folder for Firefox. The location will vary depending on XP or Vista/Windows 7. Below is the location you should find it for Windows 7 and Vista.
Click the start button and paste in the following: %AppData%/Mozilla/Firefox/Profiles, then hit enter.

You will now your profile folder. Double click into this folder. Locate the file called “parent.lock” and delete this file.
Firefox should now startup normally. If not, check step 3.
    3) Create a new profile folder
This step only applies if your profile folder does not exist at all. If you opened the profile location in step (2) and no profile folder exists, you will need to create a new one in order to get Firefox started. This would be a very rare occurence, but we have had certain software delete our profile and this was the only way to start Firefox again.
Click Start and then type in %AppData%/Mozilla/Firefox, then hit enter.
You should see a profiles folder, which will be empty and a file called “profiles.ini”. Open the file profiles.ini to identify the name of your default profile folder. You will see an entry like the following in profiles.ini
    “Path=Profiles/zr6t8orp.default”
What you need to do next is go back into the empty profiles folder and create a new folder with the name specified in “profiles.ini”. In this case, we created a new folder called “zr6t8orp.default”.
We can now start Firefox again with our empty profile folder. All settings and bookmarks will be lost however, because the profile is being re-created.

How to Keep IE7 From Crashing on Startup

Browser settings, add-ons, toolbars and plug-ins can all cause Internet Explorer 7 to crash. Deleting IE7's existing settings will remove these third-party utilities, restoring the browser to its original state. Before resetting the browser, however, you can load IE7 without add-ons to determine if third-party additions are the source of the error.

    Instructions

      • 1
Click "Start." Type "internet explorer" into the "Start Search" box. Choose "Internet Explorer (No Add-ons)" from the results. If IE7 crashes after launching the application, proceed to the next step.
      • 2
Click the Windows logo located on the taskbar. Type "internet" into the "Start Search" field. Click "Internet Options."
      • 3
Click "Advanced." Click "Reset," located under the section "Reset Internet Explorer Settings."
      • 4
Click "Reset" again. Click "Close." Restart Internet Explorer.

      Clear the Cache

      • 1Click "Start." Click "Control Panel." Type "internet options" into the search field near the top of the window.
      • 2Choose "Internet Options" from the results. Click "General" then click "Delete," located below "Browsing history."
      • 3 click "Delete files." Click "Delete cookies." Click "Close" and click "OK."

How to Fix Microsoft Internet Explorer Not Responding

Microsoft Internet Explorer is the default web browser included in all copies of the Microsoft Windows operating system. Internet Explorer is one of the most widely used Internet browsers and is capable of displaying all standards-compliant websites and web applications. Sometimes, the Internet Explorer software locks up or freezes and does not respond to the user's commands. Disable all of the programs except for essential services such as your anti-virus software and firewall. Restart your PC.
      • 2
Hold down "Ctrl," "Alt" and "Delete" on your keyboard simultaneously. This will activate the Windows Task Manager. Select "iexplorer.exe" in the list of running programs and click "End Task." Continue to Step 3 if that does not close the Internet Explorer browser.

How to Fix IE6 crashes in Windows XP

The problem is that Internet Explorer crashes after viewing a web page. Not all web pages though, I was able to successfully view about half of those I tested with IE6. One site that crashes it pretty quickly is Microsoft's own msn.com (they offered it as an example).

It wasn't hard to find information online about this problem which was introduced in the December 11th round of bug fixes to Windows.
According to Computerworld, reports came in immediately after the release of the December 11th patches, about problems with Internet Explorer. I was just hit with this because I always wait a bit before installing new bug fixes. This wasn't the first time that a poorly tested fix created a new problem.
To document the problem Microsoft created Knowledge Base article 946627.
On December 18th, Microsoft offered a work-around in the form of a registry zap. Not your most user-friendly undertaking.
On December 20th, however, they incorporated the registry zap into a downloadable EXE file, and updated the Knowledge Base article with a link to the file.
    Uninstalling
Rather than fix the fix with a registry zap that seems to target the symptom rather than the underlying problem*, my first reaction was to un-install the buggy bug fix.

Windows XP users can do this using the "Add or Remove Programs" applet in the Control Panel (see above). At the top of the window, turn on the checkbox for Show updates and sort by date last used. Then, scroll to the bottom and look for KB942615.

When I did this however, I was scared off by the warning message shown above. Even if I was willing to risk breaking two other bug fixes, I want no more to do with the Adobe Flash player. If you try this, please leave a comment below about the patches and applications, if any, that you get warned about.
    Installing
You can download the automated registry zap here . The file is WindowsXP-KB946627-x86-ENU.exe, and running it starts up a Wizard (below) that walks you through a simple, standard installation process.

I suggest making a restore point before installing anything. Can't hurt. In my case, the fix was immediate, there was no need to restart Windows.
According to this Microsoft Security Response Center blog posting the newly automated fix has been incorporated into windows update.
    <sarcasm>
Considering how so few people use Internet Explorer and even fewer use Windows XP and Vista, combined with the limited resources of the company that produced both products, it's no surprise that quality assurance for the original bug fix might be lacking.

How to Fix firefox crashing, hangs, not responding problem

Some of the firefox users have reported that their firefox crashes often or stops responding or hangs.. Whatever be the type of problem, it is disturbing, frustrating and maybe critically annoying sometimes. Well, Mozilla Firefox is open source software and whose development is contributed by various smart developers from the world, yet sometimes, there might be a few bugs BUT not always. Actually, users face problem not due to firefox but due to some other reason that they are not probably aware of. Here in this post, I have tried to list all those possible reasons which might cause your firefox to stop responding or hang or crash sometimes and the solutions of those problems.

Reasons and Solutions for Mozilla Firefox Crashes, Hangs and Not responding problems :

    1. Adobe Flash Player crashing – Sometimes, the adobe flash player crashes on few websites (Note: Adobe flash player is a plugin by Adobe not by Mozilla foundation.) like video websites or websites where intensive and heavy flash scripts are working. In such case, firefox might not respond for few minutes.
Solution : Keep your adobe flash player plugin for firefox up to date. Whenever an update to the flash player is available, just update it outright. When the flash plugin crashes or stops responding, it may pop a dialog box asking your permission to abort the running script, you may hit abort to restore responsiveness then.
    2. Low memory but heavy usage – Sometimes, on low resources computers/netbooks/notebooks (which have low ram, low speed processor, etc), when you open many websites simultaneously, the total responsiveness might decrease to a significant degree.
Solution : Don’t open too many tabs at a time especially if you’re on low resources system. Firefox developers team have always been trying to make firefox swift on every kind of system and this has always been one of top concerns and as new versions are released, the same has improved a lot.
    3. Faulty Plugins and Addons – Sometimes certain addons or plugins are responsible for firefox crashing. You could easily identify such situation.
Solution: If you installed a new addon and firefox has started crashing after that installation, it is better to remove that addon. Further, if the problem persists, you may want to start firefox safe mode by going to all programs – mozilla firefox – firefox safe mode. This mode loads the mozilla browser without loading any addons. This is particularly useful to diagnose the faulty addons. Further keep your plugins and addons update. To check whether your plugins are up to date or not, follow here . Note:This link only checks your installed plugins for latest version and not your addons.
    4. Other Conflicting Programs and Softwares – Sometimes, some other programs which modify or interrupt the normal operation of mozilla firefox browser may result in crashes and hanging problems of firefox or even your whole system.
Solution : If you installed any program of late and firefox crashing problem started after that, then you should remove that software.
    5. Antivirus, Internet Security Suite, Firewalls – Sometimes, antivirus softwares or your internet security software blocks firefox from operating as normal either restricting internet access or by changing its process and the environment it needs to run.
Solution: Install and configure antivirus, internet security software and firewall very well. Check their vaults list. Add firefox to the whitelist in these programs. Also, don’t forget to keep your antivirus, antimalware, antispyware, firewall and other internet security softwares updated to the latest definition.
    6. Outdated Firefox – New Mozilla firefox versions are rapidly released with several improvements and bug fixes. You might not have the latest version installed.
Solution : Update firefox to latest version.
    7. Outdated OS or drivers : Your os be it windows, linux or mac might be outdated or might not have the latest minor and major updates integrated. Even drivers especially graphics driver should be regularly updated to the latest available version. This might be one of the causes in your case for firefox crashing.

    The Problem With Opera

I want to make it clear from the outset that I think Opera is great. I have it installed and use it regularly, but it’s never become my default browser.

Opera currently holds 2% of the worldwide desktop market. It’s never moved significantly beyond that figure despite a constant rate of innovations from the company. The market has grown so there are more Opera users, but newer browsers such as Chrome are growing at a considerably faster rate.

Marketing is one reason. Opera could never match Google’s advertising budget and the company is based in Norway so it has less impact on the massive US market. The name and logo are not as recognizable as other web brands either.

However, this has never hindered Opera in the mobile arena. That is a different market; there are fewer competitors and Nokia has helped by pre-installing the browser on its phones. But given Opera is so well entrenched on mobile devices, it’s a little surprising more people don’t use the desktop version.

    Power = Pain?

In my opinion, Opera’s biggest strength is its downfall. It’s highly configurable and offers many options — possibly too many. It takes time and effort to get the best out of the browser.
Opera is also configurable in ways which you don’t see in other applications. Perhaps that’s innovative, but it can lead to confusion. I’ve been using the application for many years but I often have difficulty locating the option I need.

For example, version 10.5 hides the menu bar but it’s easy to show it (see screenshot). That’s great — but try and find the “Hide Menu Bar” option. It’s not in the “View” menu, Appearance or Preferences dialogs. Even the help doesn’t tell you that the option appears in the “File” menu?
That may be a minor esoteric quirk, but it’s an example of how the browser annoys new users. The Opera-specific terminology rarely helps either — how many people understand that the “Personal Bar” is a bookmarks toolbar or that “Opera Link” is a synchronization tool?

Opera is usable from day 1, but you need to invest time to learn what features are available, how they work, and how they can be configured. Few people are willing to climb the steep learning curve especially when competing browsers offer an easier and less disorientating experience.
Opera does appeal to a subset of power users, although I still prefer Firefox for ultimate customization. If Opera is ever to attract a large mainstream audience, the company should:

    Address the confusing terminology
That may mean copying other vendor’s naming conventions, but it’ll provide an easier user migration path.

Remove lesser-used features from the basic browser
Facilities such as Unite, Notes, some toolbars, Dragonfly, mail and chat could all be switched off by default. They could still be provided as installation options or plugins.

    Simplify the configuration options
“Show Menu Bar” should certainly be moved and all options should be logically arranged … why are toolbar settings in both Preferences and Appearances? Advanced options could be hidden, but a single tickbox could bring them all back.

Opera deserves a higher market share and the company has reported a 300% increase in downloads following the introduction of the EU browser choice screen (although this could be partly because existing users are downloading the new version). However, they haven’t revealed actual figures and I suspect they remain relatively low compared with Chrome and Firefox.

      Fix Internet Explorer 9 Crashes

The main reason for crashing Internet Explorer 9

When you open YouTube or similar sites is incompatible extensions, especially download manger, YouTube video downloader (BHO) and old display adapter. As in Firefox, IE9 has no built-in option for automatically checking incompatible add-ons. Therefore, some Add-ons installed in IE7 or IE8 may become incompatible after you upgraded to Internet Explorer 9 (IE9).

Following are few methods to find out and eliminate IE9 crash. First, try YouTube or any problematic site by disabling all add-ons and extensions. For that, Right click IE9 icon and select InPrivate Browsing. In ‘InPrivate Browsing’ mode, all toolbars and extensions are disabled by default.

If Internet Explorer 9 no longer crashes, try disabling extensions one by one, especially BHOs of download manger, YouTube downloader, etc. In this way, you can identify the problematic add-on and disable it.

If the problem still persist, try resetting Internet Explorer altogether by going to Network And Sharing Center - Internet Options – Advanced – Reset.
Another reason for IE9 crash is incompatible or old display driver. To solve that, go to Network And Sharing Center - Internet Options – Advanced and check the option Use Software Rendering Instead Of GPU Rendering, then save the settings.
