Internet Explorer Browser Slow? Few Tips to Fix IE's Browser Problems and Boost System Performance

I think many computer users have experienced problems of their IE browser being slow. Sometimes the IE browser takes you a long time to open. Sometimes it even hangs or freezes in the middle of the way. Without a proper running IE browser, to surf the internet could be very challenging. Follow through the article and you will find several main reasons for this problem as well as the possible solution.

Disable Ctfmon.exe Process
The Ctfmon.exe Process is one of the main reasons for IE browser slow. It is mainly used in Window Internet Explorer7. The functions of this process is to monitor and control active windows and alternative input services such as handwriting, voice recognition and the word language bar. You can disable it if there is no need to use this process. By doing so, the open speed of IE browser can be optimized in a certain degree. You may follow the these steps to disable the process: Control panel---Regional and language options---language tab---click the details button---advanced Tab---click turn off advanced text service---click OK to finish.

Disable 'Plug and Play' feature

SSDP service is known as a problem which can cause application slow downs, this service will constantly search the new installed hardware devices such as printer, mouse, keyboard etc thus consume additional CPU usage. If there is no new hardware you want to install, it is recommended to disable it for the good sake. Here is how you to disable it: Control Panel---Administration tools---Services---search for "SSDP Discovery Service"---right click on it---click stop button at the top.

Clean up unwanted registry entries
Unwanted registry entry is another reason that cause IE browser slow. These entries mainly generated from programs you've uninstalled on the computer. Sometimes you think that you have successfully uninstalled a program, actually there were still many corrupted, redundant entries left in the Windows registry which make it lumpish and sluggish. The best solution is to use registry cleaner like Registry Easy to clean the registry regularly to maintain it as compact as possible.

How to setup multiple home pages in Firefox

First off, go to Tools, and then Options from the top menu. Click on the Main or General tab.

ard.

So if I wanted to have Google.com and Yahoo.com both set as startup home pages, I would type in the following:
http://www.google.com|http://www.yahoo.com
So your screen should look like this with the multiple URLs in the Home Page box:

And that’s it! Now when you open a new instance of Firefox, both of the tabs will appear! Sweet! Now there’s also an easier method of doing the same thing and that is to Use Bookmark.
Basically, if you have a folder of bookmarks in Firefox and you want to set all of them as your startup home pages, just click the Use Bookmark button and select the entire folder.

Whichever bookmarks you have stored in that folder will automatically be placed into the Home Page text box separated by the pipe symbol. So you can use either method to get multiple start pages in Firefox!

How to Turn off Firefox Go Button

If you always press "Enter" after entering a URL into your address bar, you may want to consider removing the "Go" button next to it. Removing the "Go" button from Firefox results in a less cluttered Firefox toolbar and a bigger address bar with which to work. The “Go” button in Firefox is rarely used and takes up space on the screen, although not all that much. If you want, you can easily disable it to give your address bar more room.
Notice the little green useless button on the right side.

Steps to Follow

  • Just type in about:config into the address bar,
  • Filter by the value: browser.urlbar.hideGoButton

  • Double-click on the value in the list to change it to true.
  • The green button should instantly disappear, as you can see in the screenshot.

Change Ctrl+Enter Behavior in Firefox

Let us discuss how to change Firefox so that Shift+Enter auto-completes *.org instead of *.net. If you are unfamiliar with how this works, you can enter in google into the address bar, and use Ctrl+Enter instead of just hitting enter and Firefox will automatically complete it to www.google.com.

About:Config Tweak
To adjust the built-in Ctrl+Enter setting, you can just set some values in the Firefox configuration to change the default from .com to whatever else you want. If you want to change Shift+Ctrl+Enter then you’ll have to skip down to the next section.Navigate to about:config in your address bar, and then filter by browser.fixup as shown here:

There are a couple of values that you can set related to this setting:

  • browser.fixup.alternate.enabled – You can use this to turn the Ctrl+Enter behavior off entirely.
  • browser.fixup.alternate.prefix – This value sets the prefix assigned before the keyword you type.
  • browser.fixup.alternate.suffix – This value sets what is assigned after the keyword. For instance, you could use this to change the default suffix to your country code, like .co.uk

Use the URL Suffix Extension

If you want to configure all of the settings, including the Shift+Enter for .net and the Ctrl+Shift+Enter for .org, you can use the URL Suffix extension to configure all of them, or even set a custom value for when you hit Enter in the address bar.Install the extension, and then open up the options through the add-ons screen. You’ll see this easy to use dialog:

Any changes you make in here should be immediate.

How to Speed Up Mozilla Firefox

If a page on your browser takes too much time to load, it may be due to the reasons beyond the internet connection speed.  The most common causes of sluggish page load include unnecessary history files, cookies, encrypted pages, virus attacks, java scripts and so on. If you have a good antivirus installed on your computer, it will take care of virus attacks by itself. You can also configure java script settings from the internet options under tools menu. Still you may face the slow speed trauma from your browser. The reason may be the existence of too much temporary data stored on it. You need to clean up the Firefox history regularly if you expect anything great from your browser.

Directly deleting Firefox history

If you want to clear the recent firefox history without much ado, you can find this option under the tools menu. Alternatively, you can press Ctrl + Shift + Del keys to perform this operation.

Opening firefox history

If you want to keep or delete the files selectively, you will prefer opening the history first. You can gain access to the history by clicking on the history menu on the menu bar and selecting “Show all history”

Another way to do this is by pressing Ctrl + Shift + H keys. The window library will open showing you the history, tags and bookmark options. You can selectively organize your need here.

Another place where you can configure your history settings and feel free is under privacy menu of internet options window. You can find internet options by clicking on tools menu on the menu bar.

The path is-

Tools-------Internet Options---------Privacy-----------History

You can also control the offline storage of data by limiting the size of automatic catch. Be sure not to limit it to a very small size. The catch is helpful in quick loading of the pages that you visit frequently. It is actually an offline copy of the page that you earlier had visited. But don’t extend it too much either.

The usual route to catch management is,

Tools-------Internet Options---------Advanced--------Network---------Offline Storage

The speed is yours to keep if you don’t forget the last word of advice, that is, always update your browser. I will suggest you to keep it in auto update mode. The update option is also located near the network option shown above.
Read my article “How to speed up your browser: internet explorer” if you are using internet explorer instead of Mozilla firefox. And Yaaa……. Happy Browsing !!!

How to Fix msvcr90.dll error after firefox upgrade to 4.0

1. Restore msvcr90.dll from the Recycle Bin. The easiest possible cause of a "missing" msvcr90.dll file is that you've mistakenly deleted it.

If you suspect that you've accidentally deleted msvcr90.dll but you've already emptied the Recycle Bin, you may be able to recover msvcr90.dll with a free file recovery program.
2. Run a virus/malware scan of your entire system. Some msvcr90.dll errors could be related to a virus or other malware infection on your computer that has damaged the DLL file. It's even possible that the msvcr90.dll error you're seeing is related to a hostile program that's masquerading as the file.

3. Use System Restore to undo recent system changes. If you suspect that the msvcr90.dll error was caused by a change made to an important file or configuration, a System Restore could solve the problem.

4. Reinstall the program that uses the msvcr90.dll file. If the msvcr90.dll DLL error occurs when you use a particular program, reinstalling the program should replace the file.

Important: Try your best to complete this step. Reinstalling the program that provides the msvcr90.dll file, if possible, is a likely solution to this DLL error.

5. Update the drivers for hardware devices that might be related to msvcr90.dll. If, for example, you're receiving a "The file msvcr90.dll is missing" error when you play a 3D video game, try updating the drivers for your video card.

Note: The msvcr90.dll file may or may not be related to video cards - this was just an example. The key here is to pay very close attention to the context of the error and troubleshoot accordingly.

6. Roll back a driver to a previously installed version if msvcr90.dll errors began after updating a particular hardware device's driver.

7. Run the sfc /scannow System File Checker command to replace a missing or corrupt copy of the msvcr90.dll file. If this DLL file is provided my Microsoft, the System File Checker tool should restore it.

8. Install any available Windows updates. Many service packs and other patches replace or update some of the hundreds of Microsoft distributed DLL files on your computer. The msvcr90.dll file could be included in one of those updates.

9. Test your memory and then test your hard drive. I've left the majority of hardware troubleshooting to the last step, but your computer's memory and hard drive are easy to test and are the most likely components that might cause msvcr90.dll errors as they fail.

If the hardware fails any of your tests, replace the memory or replace the hard drive as soon as possible.

10. Repair your installation of Windows. If the individual msvcr90.dll file troubleshooting advice above is unsuccessful, performing a startup repair or repair installation should restore all Windows DLL files to their working versions.

11. Use a free registry cleaner to repair msvcr90.dll related issues in the registry. A free registry cleaner program may be able to help by removing invalid msvcr90.dll registry entries that might be causing the DLL error.

Important: I rarely recommend the use of registry cleaners. I've included the option here as a "last resort" attempt before the destructive step coming up next.

12. Perform a clean installation of Windows. A clean install of Windows will erase everything from the hard drive and install a fresh copy of Windows. If none of the steps above correct the msvcr90.dll error, this should be your next course of action.

Important: All the information on your hard drive will be erased during a clean install. Make sure you've made the best attempt possible to fix the msvcr90.dll error using a troubleshooting step prior to this one.

13. Troubleshoot for a hardware problem if any msvcr90.dll errors persist. After a clean install of Windows, your DLL problem can only be hardware related.

How to fix error 0xc0000005 in Google Chrome

Google Chrome is just born, but it seems to suffer from weird errors every now and then. As a matter of fact, Chrome may return you the following error: “The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005).Click on OK to terminate the application”. This kind of error affects all windows operating system including Windows Vista (SP1, Ultimate), Windows XP3 or Windows XP2. Most of the time the message 0xc0000005 is triggered by Symantec Endpoint Protection. Anyway many people are reporting it even though they don’t have such a piece of software.  If you are using the above mentioned software, here is a quick fix:

  1. Click Start.
  2. In the Search bar type regedit and press Enter.
  3. Look for the following key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ CurrentControlSet\ Services\SysPlant
  4. Locate the subkey Start and change the value to 4.
  5. Reboot the computer to make the change effective.
If instead you don’t have any Symantec software, maybe your issue is due to its sandbox which causes Google Chrome to crash. To solve it follow these simple steps:
  • Right-click on the Google Chrome icon ( yes, the one on your desktop).
  • Click the shortcut tab.
  • Add this code to the end of the Target line (don’t forget to put a space between): –no-sandbox

How To Disable Individual Plug-ins in Google Chrome

Have you ever wondered how to disable useless or insecure browser plug-ins in Google Chrome? Here’s the lowdown on how to get rid of Java, Acrobat, Silverlight, and the rest of the plugins you probably want to get rid of.

Disabling Plugins in Google Chrome
If you head to about:plugins in your address bar, you’ll probably see a list of plugins, but won’t be able to disable them yet. What you’ll need to do is switch over to the Dev (Update: Or Beta) channel of Chrome, which gives you access to all the latest features—though you might be warned that sometimes the dev and beta channels might be less stable than the release channe.
Ready to proceed? Head to the Dev / Beta Channel page, and then click the link to run the installer. You’ll be prompted to restart Chrome when you’re done.
Note that Mac and Windows users can both run an installer to switch. Linux users will have to install a package.
Note: Once you’ve switched to the Dev or beta channel, you can’t really switch to the stable channel. You’ll have to uninstall Chrome and then reinstall the regular version.
Now that you’ve switched to the dev or beta channel and restarted your browser, head toabout:plugins in the address bar, and then just disable each plugin you really don’t need.
Plugins you can generally live without?  Java, Acrobat, Microsoft Office, Windows Presentation Foundation, Silverlight. These will be on a case-by-case basis, of course, but the vast majority of large websites don’t require any of those. When it comes right down to it, the only plugin that most people require is Flash… and leave the “Default Plug-in” alone too.

How to backup Firefox bookmarks

Mozilla Firefox is a free and open source web browser descended from the Mozilla Application Suite and managed by Mozilla Corporation. Firefox had 22.51% of the recorded usage share of web browsers as of May 2009, making it the second most popular browser in terms of current use worldwide, after Internet Explorer.

Tools you will need:

Firefox 3.5

Step-by-step Guide: how to backup Firefox bookmarks?

Step 1: Open your Firefox Web browser. Click on "bookmark" in your Firefox menu, located at the top of your browser window.

Step 2: After that, the bookmark window will pop up. Organize Bookmarks to bring up your bookmarks manager. Now you want to click the top button that says "Import and Backup".

How to Stop Browser Pop Ups in Firefox 3.x

The best way to get rid of browser pop-ups is by leveraging the built in features of the most popular browsers. This post will focus on Internet Explorer 7 and Mozilla Firefox 3.Browsers help you to increase internet speed.

Firefox 3 users have an advantage as the built-in pop-up block has the ability to block up pretty much any pop-up window, so let's get started.

Select Tools menu, then

Options.
When the options window opens, click on the content tab and make sure the Block pop-up windows option is checked.
As of now we have the basic pop-up protection enabled, but what happens if you need to activate the pop-ups for a specific website that Firefox is blocking?
n order to allow pop-ups for a specific website, open the options window again (Steps 1 & 2). Go to the content tab and click on the exceptions button.
When the exceptions window opens, add the address you want to allow pop-ups on using the following naming convention: www.sitename.com / www.sitename.net (you get the drill). Then click the Allow button followed by the OK button to go back to the options window.

Now you have created an exception to allow pop-ups for that website. This process can be repeated as needed.

If for any reason you change your mind and want to remove one of the website that you added as an exception to allow pop-ups you just need to go back to the Allowed Sites window (Steps 1-3).

Now look the website you want to remove from your “Allow Pop-ups” list and highlight it. Next click the Remove Site button. The site will disappear from the list and pop-ups won’t be allowed on that website

How to Remove Safari Plug-ins

Safari, Apple’s web browser, is one of the best browsers for the Mac. Out of the box, Safari is fast and can handle just about any type of web site.
As is true of most browsers (and some other software programs), you can expand Safari’s feature set by adding modules called plug-ins. Plug-ins are small programs that can add functionality that a software program lacks; they can also enhance a program’s existing capabilities.

Plug-ins can have a down side. Poorly written plug-ins can slow down Safari’s web rendering performance. Plug-ins can compete with other plug-ins, causing stability issues, or replace a program’s built-in functionality with methods that aren’t as, well, functional.
Whether you want to add functionality or fix a plug-in problem, it’s a good idea to know how to find out what plug-ins Safari is currently using, and how to remove the ones you don’t wish to use.

Find Your Installed Safari Plug-ins

Safari is quite willing to disclose which plug-ins are installed, although many people end up looking in the wrong place for this information. The first time I wanted to find out how Safari manages plug-ins, I looked in Safari’s preferences (from the Safari menu, select ‘Preferences’). Nope, they’re not there. The View menu seemed to be the next likely possibility; after all, I wanted to view the installed plug-ins. Nope, they’re not there either. When all else fails, try the Help menu. A search on ‘plug-ins’ revealed their location.
  1. Launch Safari.
  2. From the Help menu, select ‘Installed Plug-ins.’
  3. Safari will display a new web page that lists all of the Safari plug-ins that are currently installed on your system.

How To Fix Firefox Crashes in Windows 7

Most people have a very positive experience of net surfing on Windows 7. However, there have been reported a number of browser related errors such as Windows 7 Firefox crashes. Updating/Adjusting Flash: Sometimes it is the Flash player which causes Firefox to crash in Windows 7. You can either install the latest version of Shockwave Flash player or get a previous version in case the latest Flash player is causing Windows 7 Firefox crashes.
You can do this by following these steps:
> Uninstall the existing Flash player using the Adobe official guide ( http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html )
> Now install the latest Flash player from Adobe's web site. If the latest version is not working then install some previous version of Flash.
Browser Add-ons/Plug-ins: Sometimes due to conflicting add-ons and browser plugins the Windows 7 Firefox crashes. Uninstall any add-on which you have recently installed and after which Firefox is crashing in Windows 7.
Clear Cache, History and Temporary Internet Files: Before running the registry repairing scan clearing cache, history and temporary internet files from the browser is really helpful.

How to fix a “lost” Internet connection

Accessing the Internet is has become one of the primary reasons we use our computers today, and losing our connections can be a frustrating disruption to our routine. If you rely on the Internet for conducting business, or “telecommuting” to work, a failed Internet connection can cost you money as well. When your browser displays a ”404 Error” (server not found), or a text balloon tells you that you have “Limited or no connectivity”, you have what we Tech Support specialists call a “Internet problem”, and it’s time to do a little troubleshooting.
Troubleshooting your network can be a complex job and you might need the help of an experienced professional (shameless plug: such as myself, at Aplus Computer Aid), but before you give us a call, Windows has a built-in tool you should try. This tool only takes a few minutes and doesn’t require any special training. It is the second thing you should try when disconnected (the first is restart your PC).

Tip of the day: Repair your Internet Connection with the Network Connection Repair tool.
1) If your Network icon is visible in your Notification Area (down by the clock), right-click on it and select “Repair”

* If your Network icon is not displayed in the Notification Area, you need to access Network Connections in your Control Panel. In XP, click Start >Control Panel and under “Pick a category” select “Network and Internet Connections”, then click “Network Connections”.

Right-click on the connection you’re trying to repair (either the “LAN”, or the “Wireless network”) and select “Repair”.
The steps above are pretty much exactly the same in Vista, but with slightly different wording on the menus.

2) Windows will now automatically take several basic steps that will essentially ‘flush’ the current (not working) configuration, and start fresh.. requesting a new IP address from your modem. After a minute or so, you will see…

..and it’s time to test your new connection by opening your browser and trying to surf the Web.
If for some unhappy reason this fails to re-connect you to the Internet, there is (probably) a problem with your network, or ISP, and the next step to take is to reboot your modem. The easy way to do this is to unplug its power, count to 10 slowly, and plug the power back in. You may have to repeat the Repair tool after the modem reboot.
These easy steps will reconnect you to the Internet the vast majority of the time (I would venture to say, 95%) and save you from having to call a Tech Support specialist (and your Geek Quotient has just gone up, too). However, it will not resolve every networking issue, and you may have to give your ISP a call for help. (They may have to reset something at their end, for example.) My experiences with ISP Tech Support have varied, and haven’t always been enjoyable.. but you gotta do what you gotta do.
In today’s world, Internet connectivity is a must.

Step 5 – Choose “Add or Remove Programs” then select the “Microsoft Internet Explorer” menu choice.

Step 6 – Choose “Repair Internet Explorer” then click “Ok.” This forces the Windows OS to scan the copy of Internet Explorer installed on the computer for errors and to automatically repair the issues discovered.

Step 7 – After Windows is repaired, double click the “MY Computer” icon on the computer’s desktop.

Step 8 – Right-click the “C” drive on the computer and choose the “Defragment” menu option. If the computer’s hard drive was not defragmented recently, this step may take several hours to complete. This step should be completed for each hard drive installed on the computer.

Step 9 – Restart the computer and Internet Explorer will respond normally. After a successful operational test, consider adding third party applications to the computer’s start-up options in single additions. If the issue recurs, remove the program from the start-up list of applications.

    Click OK.
Using the left hand side pane, navigate as shown below:
    User Configuration
    > Administrative Templates
    > Windows Components
    > Internet Explorer

Moding the setting for Prevent performance of First Run Customize settings to Enabled and change the value in the drop-down box to Go directly to home page
Click OK and close Group Policy
    Restart Internet Explorer 7

Hopefully one of these three methods will fix your runonce error and get IE7 loading directory to your home page! If you have a question, post a comment!
